World Blood Donor Day is June 14 – Give Back with Curiosity Lab

Red Cross

World Blood Donor Day is Saturday, June 14, and we’re joining forces with the French‑American Chamber of Commerce Atlanta‑Southeast and the American Red Cross to host a community blood drive. A single donation can help save up to three lives – an easy, high‑impact way to give back.

This does not include all the information the American Red Cross provides and is not official medical advice from Curiosity Lab. For additional information on blood donation preparation by the American Red Cross, please visit their website directly to ensure you are fully educated before donating.

How to Prepare

A few days before your appointment

  • Add iron‑rich foods – spinach, beans, lean meats, fortified cereals — to your meals to keep hemoglobin levels strong.

Twenty‑four hours before donating

  • Drink extra water and go easy on caffeine or alcohol. Proper hydration speeds the process and helps you feel better afterward.

On donation day

  • Bring a photo ID (driver’s license, donor card, or other government‑issued ID).
  • Have a list of any prescriptions or over‑the‑counter medications you take.
  • Wear a short‑sleeve shirt or something with sleeves that roll up easily.

After your donation

  • Rest at the refreshment area for 10–15 minutes, enjoy a snack, and keep hydrating through the evening.
  • Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for the rest of the day.

For full eligibility guidelines—including travel, medications, or vaccinations—visit the American Red Cross website or call 1‑800‑RED CROSS.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take?
Plan on about an hour for whole‑blood donations; Power Red can take 15–20 minutes longer.

Is donating safe?
Yes. Each collection kit is sterile and used only once. Red Cross staff follow strict FDA protocols, and giving blood does not weaken your immune system.

Can I donate after a recent flu or COVID shot?
In most cases, yes. Bring the vaccine name and date if it was within the last eight weeks.
