CURIOSITY LABとは

ピーチツリーコーナーズ市は、米国南部ジョージア州の州都アトランタ市の近郊に2012年に誕生した人口約4.2万人の新しい都市です。ピーチツリーコーナーズ市の所在するグウィネット郡は外国企業の進出も盛んにおこなわれている経済活動の活発な地域で、同市も企業の進出を積極的に受け入れていますが、特徴的なこととして、現代社会におけるスマートシティへの取り組みを見据えて、市運営による非営利の5GインキュベーターとしてのエコシステムであるCURIOSITY LABを　　年に発足させたことが挙げられます。

CURIOSITY LABは、市内のスマートシティ・テクノロジーパークに設置された施設と、市内の公道を用いた5G実証実験道路からなっています。500エーカー（約200ヘクタール）のスマートシティ・テクノロジーパークの施設はドイツテレコムのTモバイルおよびジョージア工科大学と共同で設置された米国内初のスマートシティ環境の一つで、25,000平方フィート（約2300平米）のイノベーション・センターと3マイル（約4.8㎞）の自律走行車テストトラックを備えており、そこでは、自律走行車、ロボット工学、産業用ドローンアプリケーション、複合現実トレーニングおよびエンターテイメント、遠隔医療、個人の健康とフィットネスのウェアラブル、その他のテクノロジーなどの開発およびを構築およ実験を行うことができます。5G実証実験道路では、ジェイコブスエンジニアリンググループ、デルタ航空、ボッシュ、シスコシステムズ、クアルコムなどの協力を得て、車両とインフラストラクチャを接続するテクノロジーを通じ、まさに市内におけるスマートシステムテクノロジーを展開しています。当初は道路沿いのインフラストラクチャ、交通管理、道路の安全に重点を置いていますが、さらに、V2V、V2I、V2P、そしてV2Xを推進すべく、生体認証技術、都市の自律管理、交通の安全性の向上、交通渋滞の緩和、自動車やその他の道路車両の環境への影響の軽減のための高速道路システムの開発などに取り組むことを目指しています。こうした取り組みが認められ、CURIOSITY LABは、IDCガバメント・インサイトによる第4回スマートシティ・ノース・アメリカ交通賞を受賞しました。

以上に加えて、ピーチツリーコーナーズ市は、CURIOSITY LABの活動の一環として、ジョージア工科大学の技術開発センターと提携した非営利のビジネスインキュベーターを設立し、ソフトウェアおよびハードウェア技術の新興企業を支援し、新製品の発売と成長に必要なサポートを提供しています。

CURIOSITY LABは、スマートシティへの取り組みを進める過程で、米国内の関係者のみならず、国際的な提携をも模索し、バルセロナ・スマートシティ・エキスポ・ワールドコングレスに毎年出展していますし、カナダ、スランス、イスラエル、スイスなど外国の関係者・関係企業などとも提携を進めています。例えば、フランス商工会議所は、在アトランタ仏総領事館からCURIOSITY LABのイノベーション・センター内に業務を移転し、提携の強化を図っています。

 

CURIOSITY LABが日本で求めているのは：

技術面で世界最高峰にある日本ではスマートシティに関する様々な取り組みが行われていて、画期的な成果が得られているのは、当CURIOSITY LABでもよく存じております。バルセロナ・スマートシティ・エキスポ・ワールドコングレスでも、日本館の活気は群を抜いています。CURIOSITY LABは、そうした日本で様々な取り組みを行われている機関や関係者の方々と交流を図って経験・知見の共有をさせていただければ今後のさらなる進展につながるものと確信しております。CURIOSITY LABは、米国立標準技術研究所 (NIST) のサイバーセキュリティ防護基準をみたす施設でもあります。実験結果等の知的財産に関しましては、CURIOSITY LABは所有権を取得せず、開発を行われる方のみの管轄となります。他方、CURIOSITY LABは市運営の非営利エコシステムですので、公道、デバイス、センサー、5Gの使用など、実証実験および開発のためのインフラを無料で利用いただくこともできます。今後皆様と交流・協力の可能性につき、ご相談させていただきたく存じますので、何卒よろしくお願いいたします。

Introduction of CURIOSITY LAB at Peachtree Corners

What is CURIOSITY LAB?

Peachtree Corners is a new city with a population of some 42.000 people that was established in 2012 near Atlanta, the capital of Georgia in the Southern United States. Gwinnett County, where Peachtree Corners is located, is an economically active area where foreign companies are actively expanding, and Peachtree Corners is also actively accepting companies, but what is unique about this city is that in 2019 it launched CURIOSITY LAB, a non-profit 5G incubator ecosystem run by the city, in anticipation of smart city efforts in modern society.

CURIOSITY LAB consists of facilities installed in the city’s Smart City Technology Park and a 5G demonstration road using public roads in the city.  The 500-acre Smart City Technology Park facility, one of the first smart city environments in the U.S., was established in collaboration with Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile and the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) and features a 25,000-square-foot Innovation Center as well as a three-mile autonomous vehicle test track where autonomous vehicles, robotics, industrial drone applications, mixed reality training and entertainment, telemedicine, personal health and fitness wearables and other technologies can be developed, built and tested.  The 5G test road is truly deploying smart systems technology within the city itself through vehicle and infrastructure connecting technologies, with collaborations from Jacobs Engineering Group, Delta Airlines, Bosch, Cisco Systems and Qualcomm, among others.  While the initial focus is on roadside infrastructure, traffic management, and road safety, the plan is to further address V2V, V2I, V2P, and V2X by developing biometric authentication technology, autonomous urban management, and highway systems to improve road safety, ease traffic congestion, and reduce the environmental impact of automobiles and other road vehicles.  In recognition of these efforts, CURIOSITY LAB received the 4th annual Smart City North America Transportation Award from IDC Government Insights.

In addition, as part of CURIOSITY LAB’s activities, the City of Peachtree Corners has established a non-profit business incubator in partnership with Georgia Tech’s Technology Development Center to support software and hardware technology startups and provide them with the support they need to launch and grow new products.

As CURIOSITY LAB advances its smart city efforts, it seeks partnerships not only with stakeholders in the United States but also internationally, exhibiting annually at the Barcelona Smart City Expo World Congress, and partnering with foreign stakeholders and companies such as Canada, France, and Israel.  For example, the French Chamber of Commerce has relocated its operations from the French Consulate General in Atlanta to CURIOSITY LAB’s Innovation Center to strengthen its partnership.

What CURIOSITY LAB is looking for in Japan:

CURIOSITY LAB is well aware that Japan, the world’s leading country in terms of technology, is engaged in various smart city initiatives and has achieved groundbreaking results.  The lively Japan Pavilion at the Barcelona Smart City Expo World Congress is also outstanding.  CURIOSITY LAB is convinced that if it can interact with the institutions and people involved in these initiatives in Japan and share our experience and knowledge, this will lead to further progress in the future.  CURIOSITY LAB is also a facility that meets the cybersecurity protection standards of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).  CURIOSITY LAB does not acquire ownership of intellectual property such as experimental results, and the intellectual property is the sole responsibility of the developer.  On the other hand, since CURIOSITY LAB is a non-profit ecosystem run by the city, the infrastructure for various experiments and development, such as public roads, devices, sensors, and 5G, can be used free of charge.  CURIOSITY LAB would like to discuss the possibility of exchanges and cooperation with you in the future, and looks forward to future partnership.
